Not All Categories Are Equal
If you've ever browsed Shopee during a mega sale, you've probably noticed that some categories seem packed with genuine bargains while others feel like a minefield of inflated "original prices." That gut feeling isn't wrong — different product categories have vastly different patterns when it comes to discounts.
Some categories consistently offer real price drops backed by competitive pressure between sellers and brands. Others are dominated by sellers who set artificially high original prices to manufacture impressive-looking discount percentages. The difference can mean hundreds of pesos saved — or wasted.
We analyzed our database of tracked products to rank categories by their average Sniff Score — a measure of how trustworthy the discounts in each category actually are. The results tell a clear story about where to focus your attention and where to be extra careful.

What This Means for You
These rankings aren't just trivia — they're a practical guide for where to spend your time and money on Shopee. Here's how to use them:
- Categories at the top of the list are where you're most likely to find genuine deals. High average Sniff Scores mean sellers in these categories are pricing honestly more often than not. When you see a discount badge in a top-ranked category, the odds are in your favor that it's real.
- Lower-ranked categories aren't necessarily bad — just be more cautious and check the Sniff Score. A lower average score means there's more price inflation happening in that category overall. But good deals still exist — you just need to verify each one individually instead of trusting the discount badge at face value.
- Within any category, individual sellers vary wildly. A trusted seller in a "risky" category can still offer great deals, while a shady seller in a "safe" category can still inflate prices. Category rankings tell you the odds, but the Sniff Score on each product tells you the truth.
- Use SaleSniff to check individual products regardless of category. These rankings help you prioritize where to browse, but whenever you're about to buy something specific, check the product's own Sniff Score and price history. That's the most reliable way to know if you're getting a real deal.
Seasonal Patterns
These category rankings aren't static — they shift during major sale events and holiday seasons. Electronics often jumps up the rankings during 11.11 and 12.12 as brands clear end-of-year inventory with genuine markdowns to make room for new models. Competition between Samsung, Xiaomi, Realme, and others intensifies, pushing prices down for real.
Fashion and beauty categories tend to get a boost during mid-year sales (6.6, 7.7) when seasonal collections rotate out. Home and living often sees the most honest discounts during back-to-school periods and before Christmas, when demand is high enough that sellers don't need to fake the urgency.
